Why the certification matters more than the brand

Any box can say "removes 99% of contaminants". The question is which contaminants, and who checked. NSF/ANSI standards answer that: an independent body tests the filter against a specific list, and the certification names what it reduces. A filter certified only for taste (42) says nothing about lead or PFAS.

In our kitchen, drinking water goes through an under-sink filter plus a pitcher, even though the water where I live is good. You do not need both. A certified pitcher is a perfectly good start, and the right answer for you depends on what your own water report says. When you are ready to compare models, my water filter guide goes through pitchers, gravity systems and faucet filters.

Questions

Which water filter do I need?

The one certified to remove what is actually in your water. Start with your utility’s yearly water quality report (or a lab test if you are on a well), then match the certification: NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste, 53 for lead, 53 or 58 with PFOA/PFOS listed for PFAS.

Is a pitcher filter enough?

For chlorine taste and smell on good city water, a certified pitcher is a perfectly good start. For lead or PFAS it can be enough too, but only if that specific pitcher is certified for that contaminant.

Do I need a filter if my water report looks fine?

Not necessarily. Many people filter mostly for taste. I filter ours even though our water is good, but a good report is genuinely good news.

Do water filters remove hard water?

No. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, an appliance and scale issue rather than a health one. A water softener or descaler deals with it; a drinking-water filter does not.
